Dear readers,

I started Grecology in 2020, after the Covid-19 pandemic had thrown the world into upheaval. Whatever plans any of us had at the start of that year didn’t last long, but at the same time Substack was taking off and offered interesting opportunities for writers. The pandemic was an economic crisis as well as a public health one, and after years of writing about the Greek economy for other publications, it was exciting to have a channel to build a relationship directly with readers.

My first post was about the Greece’s dependence on tourism as the government was pushing for people to return to the country after the first lockdown. The newsletter quickly settled on a regular Friday macro update. It was fun to watch Grecology grow, and through it I’ve formed connections with readers that have moved and meant a lot to me. Ending it feels like a big wrench.

But end it I must. An exciting opportunity came up which means I’m about to start a new job and a new chapter in my career. Unfortunately, this means that I can’t continue writing Grecology, so I am mothballing the newsletter.

I want to thank you, readers, for being with me on this journey. For those of you who took out paid subscriptions, or just shared the posts, I want to thank you for supporting my work. Billing will cease and I will issue pro rata refunds for the amount of time remaining on your subscriptions. These will take a few days to process, but the refunds will be on their way. There is no need to hit any “unsubscribe” buttons — you will just stop receiving emails as the newsletter becomes inactive.

Thanks for reading,

Marcus

Thanks a lot Marcus, I know that many people including policymakers in Greece followed your newsletter and you really had an impact! Good luck in your next chapter.

Shame to hear this news. Hope you remain involved in Greek economic affairs in one capacity or another. Best of luck.
